About Me

BONNIE SIRACUSA

Bonnie Siracusa, known as “The Art Genie” is a renowned, multi-talented fine artist and muralist who resides in Great Neck, New York. Drawing, painting, and constructing were her favorite past times since the age of 2. Upon starting nursery school, her teacher immediately called her mother and told her she an art genius, creating masterpieces way beyond her years. She created art in any media she could find. For example, creating cities and cafes out of colored telephone wire, balsa wood sticks, and bathroom tiles. In junior high school, she developed skills with anatomy drawing at the Arts Student League in New York City. She attended Carnegie Mellon University and graduated with a BFA in Art. She continued her education with Graphic design courses and artist Residency trips abroad with The Parsons School of Art. She also took classes in faux finishes and decorative arts at the Finishing School in Great Neck and launched a highly successful commercial mural painting career by doing Designer Showcases with The Mansions and Millionaires on Long Island. This was in addition to simultaneously creating her own art and exhibiting them in one-person and group shows all over NYC and Long Island.

Her increased visibility and widespread commercial appeal led to numerous mural and painting commissions for businesses and private residences throughout the metro NY area, for the past 3 decades. She has received public acclaim through numerous newspaper and magazine articles as well as television broadcasts, such as in Newsday, The New York Times, The Daily News, The Great Neck Record, Glen Cove Record Pilot, The Canarsie Courier, The Flatbush Life and the King's Courier, News 12 Long Island, Art Scene On Long Island, Eyewitness News, Nightly News, and last but not least 2 highly publicized and televised ribbon cutting ceremonies that included local politicians and our state senator, Charles Schumer.

She has been a recipient of the NYS Council on the Arts Artist in Residence Grant, a member of the National Association of Women Artists, and the MTA Permanent Art Installation Competition for Proposed Renovation of the Herald Square Subway's top 3 most notable proposals. Her art has appeared in NY Art Expo, Parsons School of Design, Mansions, and Millionaires Designer Showcases, Ariel Gallery in NYC, the Mussavi Gallery and the Mary Fritchie Art Shows in West Hampton, The Port Washington Library, Spot on Spot Gallery in Great Neck, the Nassau County Museum of Fine Arts.

MY INSPIRATION.

My fine art and murals serve to directly improve people's lives and make communities better to live in. My art not only strives to create eye-catching beauty, but it strongly conveys a historic account or a satire either about me, portraits within a contemporary social situation, or a place. My commissioned murals and fine art have beautified neighborhoods, stopped graffiti, increased business and tourism traffic, created soothing environments that promote healing, built community pride, portrayed historical accounts of particular locales, and communicated important messages to the public.

My art has been coined as "Whimsical Fairy Tale Realism", which encompasses a large range of subject matter that includes portraits, landscapes, historic events, still life, interiors, and architecture. My body of work consists of acrylic paintings, Trompe-l'oeil murals, small to life-size colored and graphite pencil drawings, and mixed media paintings, some of which are housed in shadow box constructions with illumination. They are meticulous in detail, color, and the mixed media adds a lot of texture, depth, and shimmer., which creates movement as you walk around the piece. One primary vehicle of my art is self-reflection through a series of regular and life-sized mirror image self-portraits. My aim is to literally and figuratively transport the viewer to my point of view where you can look down at my hands and feet or straight into my eyes. My self-portraits are mystical, and feminine and contain mystical, religious objects that are meant to seduce the viewer into forming their own personal interpretation, which thereby makes it a universal personal journey. My mixed media paintings are whimsical and both lampoon and celebrate contemporary social situations.

MY TECHNIQUES.

My self-portraits are painted from live set-ups which include mirrors, that I do in various rooms of my home. The themes of my mixed media paintings are well thought out in advance. I then go to the event or social situation and shoot many photographs of people and backgrounds that I feel are pertinent to my concept.

As soon as I gather together all my visual research I do a combination of hand sketching and projecting images onto canvas, and create my own composition. I paint the portraits and bodies first, and then I hand sew and glue gun on the most exciting fabric and sequined trimmings I can find, to create my own unique costumes for them. If their outfits are great, I try to recreate them, but mostly I try to improve on them.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS.

I launched a highly successful mural painting career as I simultaneously created my own art and exhibited them in one-person and group shows all over NYC and Long Island. My increased visibility and meticulousness to achieve great results, led to numerous mural and painting commissions for businesses and private residences throughout the metro NYC area. I received public acclaim for both my art exhibitions and murals through numerous newspaper and magazine articles as well as television broadcasts, such as in Newsday, The New York Times, The Daily News, The Great Neck Record, Glen Cove Pilot, The Canarsie Courier, News 12 Long Island, Art Scene on Long Island, Eyewitness News, Nightly News, and last but not least, 2 highly publicized and televised ribbon cutting ceremonies that included local politicians and our state senator Charles Schumer. I have also been the recipient of the NYS Council on the Arts Artist in Residence Grant, a top 3 runner-up for the MTA Permanent Art Installation Competition for Proposed Renovation of the Herald Square Subway, and a member of the National Association of Women Artists. My art has appeared in the NY Art Expo, The Nassau County Museum of Fine Arts, Mary Fritchie Art Shows in West Hamptons, the Mansions and Millionaires Designer Showcases., and many other places.
